yay or nay: mixing metals

With gold back, and black always en vogue,
it's becoming more and more common to see a mix of metals in interiors.

(apologizing now for the irregular sizing ahead, but I really wanted you to be able to see the details,
and they were all strangely sized today!)

Kitchens, in particular, are veering away from all stainless.
I know I'm feeling tired of it - you?

both of these dining room have got a splash of gold warming up these grey metals.

Black, white, and gold - need I say more.....

but wait, maybe black, white, gold AND silver?!!

here gold and grey tones form the basis for the palette....

and several layers of metals are seamlessly incorporated into this space.

I'm wondering if this is more common because
people are slowly switching over from cool to warm metals,
they are just adding hits around the home (as an easily removed trendy item),
or it's just become more modern to mix finishes, just like we do furnishings.

what do you think -
is mixing metals something you do in your own home?
Is it a look that's here to stay?

  1. I NEVER really liked stainless steel appliances :)

  2. PS. Mixing metals in jewelry has been my things for years. Even my engagement and wedding bands are a mix of white/yellow/pink golds.

I was recently brainstorming with a friend her wedding reception decor and tried to make a strong push for white/gold/silver combo. To no luck. I guess it's not everyon's thing. But it definitely is mine!

    Gorgeous images :)

  3. Beautiful inspiration photos. We accidentally mixed metals in our bathroom - ORB faucet on the sink, brushed chrome in the shower - and I've been trying to figure out a way to make it look less of a mistake and more like I did it on purpose. I am just not that stylish though, so I figure I can just trust that no one will notice.

If I had the ability to decorate beautifully, on the other hand? I'm all for it!

  4. I love the mix, especially brass w/ silver and pops of black...maybe because that is what I have going on in my home so I am bias. ;)

  5. Yay to mixing. I've done it in my home (and my wedding ring 9 years ago) and I'm glad to see someone write about it!

  6. Yay for mixing. We can't all afford to coordinate every piece in our house and sometimes you just have to 'go' with what you love and not worry about it being too matchy match. It's the overall feeling that makes it work or not right? Not weather your sink faucet and lamp stand match ;)

  7. I like the thought of mixing it up a bit but I'm loving the gold with the grey tones.

Absolutely YAY to mixing metals. All cool, or all warm colored metals seem to me like you're trying too hard. Like you're obsessive about matching. Mixed metals seem more collected, more relaxed. Just don't try for half and half. Go mostly white, or mostly yellow and mix in some of the opposite.

  10. Totally YAY!!! Just as mixing metals in fashion and accessories help to warm up any outfit, mixing metals in gold/silver/bronze with a myriad of soft and hard textures makes for THE MOST interesting spaces...draws your eyes to all the reflective finishes to compose a perfect little room!

Gorgeous inspiration, just found your blog...soooo much goodies on here! I'm a fan!

  11. We are receiving a lot of interest in a warmed bronze patina over stainless or nickel lately. I love the warmth it gives to our designs. I think mixing metals is a great way to incorporate many different items in a home, kitchen or bath and the look is probably here to stay.

  12. It took me some time to come around to the idea of mixing metals but I love the relaxed and quirky feeling it can give space.

  14. I love the mix of metals! I'm consciously trying to make sure my room doesn't become a silver showcase and feel too cold, so I love a little gold & bronze thrown into the mix :) xo

  15. I absolutely will and do mix metals. Who can afford to start over again with the metal-du-jour? And I love a great mix!

  16. I like mixing gold and silver but not a fan of brass or bronze and silver. Your photos are the perfect illustration of how it can be done! Enjoy the weekend:)

I love the mix of metals with natural elements such as wood or stone. Gorgeous. So warming around fire places and in the kitchen. I really love metal industrial looking light fittings. There is something very "studio" about it.

  18. I only mix in very doses. I think that the current trend of eclectic interiors has opened enormous possibilities for all of us. That's why I LOVE room no 8, where the key to success is the transition through blond wood and shiny black lucite.

  19. I am all for mixing metals. I think it adds interest (if done well) and a collected look. Matchy, matchy is boring! With that being said, it has to be done right, or it could be a TRAINWRECK :).

  20. Definite yay! I love mixing gold and silver in both decor and fashion. Breaking the rules is far more interesting especially when there are so many magnificent mixed metal pieces out there!
