yay or nay: a different kind of kitchen

While I'll always be a sucker for white cabinetry and carrera marble... there seems to be a growing movement toward kitchens with a touch of tattered soul. I'm seeing more and more wood countertops (scratches be damned!), unfitted cabinetry and retro-styled appliances.

This one in particular captures the look I am talking about - almost feels like an old deli, doesn't it?

Loving the hits of copper, vintage fridge and scale, and all that gorgeous rich wood - although balancing my dish ware atop crates may be taking "unfitted" a bit too far :) Now, what do you suppose that saw is for?!!

  1. I think touches of this "unfitted" look is nice but did you notice the saw? Bizarre, unless you are a butcher.

  2. I love some worn finishes like wood and copper but overall it feels a little too mishmashed to me.

  3. What I find interesting is the apparent need for an analog as well as a digital clock (that are not in synch!)

  4. Hm. I don't like it. It's beautiful for pictures but the germ freak in me wouldn't want to cook on wooden tables.

  5. I'm curious to know what they use the saw for.. humm... Thanksgiving turkey???
Overall, I actually kinda' like it. I've just recently added some vintage touches to my kitchen, but not so much the rustic piece. I think wood always warms a place and that retro fridge is *cool* if it is environmentally friendly.. though I have a sneaky suspicion it is not.

  6. That frig jogs a few very early memories. And none too fond, compared to the hi-tech refrigerators of today. My mother had a small saw in the kitchen too. For those sides of beef or a hog head that demanded something heftier than your standard kitchen knife.

  7. lol! I didn't even notice the saw until you mentioned it! Weird. But I do love the feel and the colours in this space. It's a Yay, for me.

My husband and I are in the midst of deciding on our new bench tops and I am really really loving the idea of a timber one. My husband doesn't agree because of the scratches but he loves the look. Hmmm...but they look so gorgeous.
