Cottage and wood panelling are practically synonymous here.
For some reason everyone feels the need to line their weekend retreats with copious amounts
of sometimes-garish pine and cedar planks.
So how to keep the rustic vibe but bring the panelling up to 2011?
Grey it down by applying a "wash" to the wood.
If the wood has a pre-existing finish, it has to be sanded first,
and calling in the professionals may be your best bet.
Simply apply watered down pale grey latex onto the bare planks,
rubbing into the boards (with the grain) as you go,
almost like a stain.
Saw it first in this stunner
and I'm loving it here...
The floors were actually stripped and left completely unfinished, to weather naturally.
That jaw-dropping wall of tile, which was already here,
was originally orange and so was given the same treatment as the walls.
Love, love, love the artisan feel.
The owners of this beach house are the founders of Ochre...
look at this office they've set up -
oh, to work with the sound of crashing waves in the background!!
With all the greyed down tones in the wood,
clean, pale tints are the perfect accent colors -
pastels are BACK.
It's a bit like driftwood and sea glass, translated into an interior, isn't it?
The outdoor space remains as equally low-key...
a modern table tucked under a homemade roof of bamboo poles lashed together - so totally clever...
sigh. so lovely.
How was your weekend?
I made it to Kempenfest,
our local arts and crafts extravaganza down by the lake.
Picked up an adorable baby gift for a friend (you're going to want one, and she is on Etsy - yay!)
and discovered a very cool sculptor / furniture designer that works with unique upcycled bits,
will show you the pics later this week.
Have a great monday!
What a lovely house...
ReplyDeleteI love every room,
and the outdoor space looks so laidback, just the way I like it ♥
That soft palette and those blonde woods work for me everytime, its casual and effortless yet elegant and so well put together.
ReplyDeleteOh I so agree- adore grey washed paneling- so casual but still light and airy.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a lot of white washed paneling, but the grey is a more sophisticated alternative, and looks amazing!
ReplyDeletei am not normally a lover of wood paneling but these images are beautiful the grey just gives a light airy & tranquil feeling. simply beautiful
ReplyDeletelove this post - so inspiring. You are so right about bringing the look into modern times.
ReplyDeleteSo yummy! (But I'll bet you guessed that's something I'd say!)
ReplyDeleteThanks for another inspirational post to soothe the aesthetic soul, Anne-Marie!
oh love this so much. Would do my whole house like that, but don't think it does with the 50s split...sighh! that snowbird thing will be happening one day though, fingers crossed. I find colours found on vintage seascape maps work really well in a cottage/beach house setting.
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely amazing. I could see myself living here.
ReplyDeleteSo refreshing to see all those soft colors! So many brights out there right now and I really prefer more muted tones. Love that idea for gray washing wood...
ReplyDeleteJust learned you're from my former home city...excellent...I'm in Muskoka now and well let's just say people up here must have stock in orange pine...ugh. Anyone house hunting up here will likely encounter at least one room in every house (usually more) with said pine. My answer has always been to paint it out...usually white, but the grey wash is a beautiful alternative. Thanks for sharing, and if you like Kempenfest you should head north a hour (Bracebridge) and check out Muskoka Arts and Crafts Summer Show usually the second or third weekend in July...amazing, and very well juried.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful place, I love every room and could be transported there right now!
ReplyDeleteman, the weekend was cold and rainy. so wish i was somewhere warm.
ReplyDeleteand totally ready for beach house weather. love this colour palette xx
What a beautiful cottage..I love it!
ReplyDeleteSuzie xx
Love the idea of grey washing! I've seen way too much yucky pine in Muskoka - this is a refreshing change. Lucky you to go to Kempenfest! I missed the big Muskoka show this year - had a blast participating in it last year. And I always leave with great treasures :)
ReplyDeleteI want grey wood floors sooo bad!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I'm always a little scared with too much wood panelling. But this one is done so well - that the walls sit perfectly there - creating a warm inviting space!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the various article in your site, I feel that I need more information on the topic. Can you suggest some resources please?
