Say You're With Me On This!

Working with clients is so much easier than designing for my own home!

When clients are incorperating a large television into a space
they describe what they want,
and I usually mediate the age old function vs. style debate
to find a compromise they are both satisfied with.

I'd love to know how you make this work in your place -
here, D. is the "techie" and I am the "enemy" (lol) !

D: I really want a projector for the family room.
Me: So. If we are moving the old tv into the den, we should be moving the old sofa with it...

D: How about leather?
Me: That's what I was thinking!
(happy dreams of new sofas commence)

D: Lets' get one of those giant leather reclining sofas!

Me: I was thinking two sofas, facing each other in front of the fireplace (symmetry! balance!)

D: Look - this one has cupholders! It's perfect!

Me: Um, what about something like this?

D: Maybe we could put them one behind the other.
We need to be seated directly in between the speakers.

Me: We might still want to be able to have a conversation here, right?

D: (slyly) But the screen is the focal point :)
Me: You know I do this for a living, right?!!

(pause while he considers my credentials :)

Me: How about a leather recliner for you, AND some really gorgeous sofas?
Ooh - maybe crushed velvet? SUMP-tuous!

Crate and Barrel had that lounge sofa...

Actually, there was a beautiful sofa on 1st dibs - perfection!
That would be so sumptuous...

D: Yes.... I need to go to La-Z-Boy.
Me : I need to go to Johnson's.

Pin It Now!

This post is pure awesomeness. Thanks for the laugh! When I met my husband he had THE sofa with the flip down tray thing-y with cup holders. I told him he had to sell it STAT! Good luck sweetie!

sounds like my house :) I'm fighting tooth and nail to get the TV out of my living room and permanently into the basement (we even reno'ed our basement just for that). It is still a struggle. Those things are evil :P

I'm laughing out loud--this is SO familiar! Especially the bit about being positioned between the speakers.

Thanks for this!

Sounds so familiar. Thanks for relating to every woman out there! I always ask for his opinions, but it turns into one of those "whatever you suggest, i will do the complete opposite" situations! Ughh, men!

Holy moly. I feel your pain. I've been having those same battles for sixteen years! Don't give into the cup holders, whatever you do!

I'm in stitches. I am not opposed to TV, as long as they are white, sleek, good looking, and affordable. But there is no such thing!!

Oh, and that rich C&B sofa is a winner!!!

Hilarious, I understand. We are still living with the black, microsuede reclining man sofa in our tv room. Have a lovely weekend.

This post was hilarious. Being a single lady I'm lucky that I get to make all of my decor decisions on my own, but I've definitely heard this argument before. Oh, and those white leather sofas facing each other in the room with the books in the fireplace? I die.
Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day! I'm so glad you enojoyed it! Have a good weekend!

Oh, this is so funny. I think of most of us would dream of having a movie room when it's done up well. In the end I love the ideas of the perfect Living room that is pretty without the big T.v !!!

Great post!

hahaha! Awesome post! I don't understand why they even make monstrosities like those with the recliners and cupholders! It's just too much temptation for the husbands.

You guys are the best :) Just so you know, D says he's going to go down to the MMA fight in Toronto next week and take a survey there, as well! I've told him only experts are allowed to comment :p x am

hysterical! SOunds like my house...my husband had an old recliner (when he was a bachelor) and i told him it was awful...so he got a slipcover for it (to hide stains and the awful greenish color)....I told him it was still awful...and bless his heart his response was, "but babe it is slipcovered...doesn't pottery barn do slipcovers?"

This is too funny. I feel like we have had the same conversation in our house. I actually let him buy a reclining marshmallow leather chair about 18 years ago but gosh darn it, somehow it "broke" and didn't make the move back to Canada *wink*wink*
