So recently some people were over for dinner.
We're still in the getting-to-know-you stage,
and so we were on our best behaviour :)
When they came in, and beverages had been made,
we all settled into the living room.
And then it happened.
Drinks on the coffee and end tables, sans coasters.
Now, if cold drinks sweat and hot drinks leave rings,
why do people refuse to use coasters?
I keep them here and there around the room,
everywhere a drink was sat, a coaster rested nearby.
If I am at someone's home, and they have coasters I always use them,
a result of a Mum who never had a huge budget, but always had a beautiful home,
and insisted we respect the furniture that she had pulled together..
So I sat.
Pondering exactly how type-a I am,
watching water linger in puddles on my favourite end tables.!
We're about to embark on the process of a major shuffle on the homefront,
and this room is going to be re-purposed.
The side tables will be moved to another room, and the coffee table re-thought....
and the next tables I buy may be glass.!

I think it's rude of them not to have asked you if there was a coaster to use. Bad manners.
Oh no, but what great inspiration for a post. What a lovely assortment of coasters! I love the agate ones, and the gold polka dots.
I think that it is rude to not use them if they are right in front of you.
Great post!
Well this certainly does justice for coasters!! These days there is such a bevy of beautiful coasters that there is literally something for every one so there is no reason to not use them if they are right there for the taking! Bad manners of course if they are there to use and they aren't used!! Great post.
Uh oh! Will they be coming back over anytime soon?! lol I'm with everyone else, that's slightly rude of them not to even offer to use a coaster! Seems so trivial, but if you take time to dust and polish those wood tables, it's infuriating!
I really love this post, Anne Marie :)
first impressions and all that :)
i really feel for you, I have this problem with some of my relatives (his, of course). if its not the coaters, its the dirty feet on the couch or kids running around with sticky fingers. As nice as my relatives actually are, as sweet and warm and funny, there's always a part of me that gets upset at the thought of them in my house.
And I'll tell you one other thing, it's what they were taught when they were little. Their house is always a mess, as are their lives. I say ppl using coasters says A LOT about their character
Oh the nerve! I love the coasters you showed. I made some for my house out of sisal, it was just one of those things I really needed but didn't want to spend the money on. I ended up loving them!
Geez the nerve of these people :-) I am a coaster fanatic and will surely ask the host if they have them before putting beverage on their table. I like the coasters in your post, lots of neat designs & colors!
I tend to say something flip like, "I'm horribly OCD, but the hubs puts up with me," as I place a coaster under the errant drink. While inside I'm saying, "were you raised by wolves?" The ones in my living room are actually upcycled circuit board circles pressed between acrylic. Great coaster examples! Thanks for sharing.
beautiful selection of coasters. maybe they were afraid to ruin them? We ALWAYS used coasters growing up, so I definitely have a set in my house now. The ones my parents had while we were growing up were rubber floppy-disc imitations. hilarious. I think mine are a bit more stylish than that. haha
Ugh, you must have been biting your lip! I am not polite enough and probably would have said something--with a smile, of course. ;-)
Can you believe we don't have coasters? I think it's because we never had side tables I cared about. But now that I love them with my whole heart I need some cute coasters: STAT! Thanks for the inspiration.
I almost always use coasters at home, but especially when I'm at someone else's home!
Rude, rude, rude! Your house, your rules, next time shove a coaster under their drinks. The nerve of some people! (not that I'm opinionated on the subject, lol)
Suzy xxx
I would have said something! It's not rude if you smile when you say it and just silently put the drink on a coaster as you walk by. :)
