Was looking at this beachfront home the other day,
dreaming of barefoot, wine-glass-in-hand adventure...
and noticed this....
shelving directly behind a sofa...
and a bed.
It may be because of the rather spiky bits that live on those shelves,
but I'm not sure I would be able to relax here.
While I've never been a fan of sleeping under shelves...
I suppose placing them behind the bed is a great way to sneak in some storage...
Just wondering what y'all think?
I am the only one who can't sleep for fear of a ceramic bird falling on my head?!

hahaha I had a shelf behind my bedding once upon a time. I usually only had books and an alarm clock on it though.
I'd say "yay" for the shelf... and I guess to each their own on how they want to accessorize! ;)
I don't like shelves above my head - so behind the sofa or over a bed would be a no for me!
A thousand times "NO" for those of us living in earthquake-prone areas. Plus, I think leaning back against shelves in bed is really, really uncomfortable. Looks pretty, though!
Haha I probably couldn't sleep under a shelf, but I was considering putting up a shelf behind my bed as there's not a ton of room for bedside tables. I think behind is ok and works really well for rooms without a ton of storage.
It depends on how vigorous your bedroom activities are, but I'd be afraid of things falling. Pretty pictures, though. Thanks for sharing.
My son will be attending St. Edwards in Austin this August and I just was thinking about his bedroom. We have a small Expedit bookshelf in his room and I was thinking of getting another, turning them sideways and using that system for a headboard for him.
When he moved his mattress, there would be extra "secret" storage. :) I like it for him but not for me!
Probably not for me but the rooms definitely seem to be able to pull it off for the most part. I like to sit in bed and read so I would hate having a shelf right above me.
Hi Anne-Marie, so happy to have found your blog through Things That Sparkle. Alex's guest post is finally up on my blog, would love for you to see her ideas on ladies poker night. http://bit.ly/mQ26B4
How fascinating to be a color professional! Love it. Newest Follower!!
Best, Tamra
I am not a "shelf above my head" kind of gal. For many reasons, earthquakes, check, asthetics, check, spiders hanging out there, check, a glass vase falling on my head, check, etc.....too many reasons and mostly becuase I just don't love the look. That said I am sure there are instance where the look works quite nicely....but overall not a huge fan.
A definate no from me also. Apart from the dust and creepy crawlies that could get in there, I too would be terrified of it all collapsing on my head!

nope nope nope! too scared from things falling...especially over the bed!
i would have to say yay. i love the look of it. however i was staging for a client last week and suggested that she hang a mirror over her bed. she looked at me in horror and said NO WAY! then i kind of got chills thinking about how awful it would be if it fell down...but i still think it looks good! :o)
Reminds me of the headboard I had as a child.
And I'd be terrified of something falling on my head. Yikes.
Ha. Well said. Reminds me of all the home decor pictures we used to see in mags where the coffee table was scrunched right in close to the sofa and chairs, or pictures where there was no room to walk around the dining table if the chairs were pulled out. Lovely but not really livable.
I felt a little self conscious after reading this the first time and waited to comment. I'm feeling a little more confident because the shelving overhead works for me and I'm sticking to it. I wouldn't do it in my bedroom though. See my shelving here. It works for me because what the heck else would I fill that space with and I placed it high enough that you won't bang your head against it.
I live in Oklahoma so earthquakes are not an issue. We have tornadoes. It wouldn't matter if everything was bolted to the walls and floor, you can kiss it goodbye!
I love it when everyone has their own take on a yea or nay post.. this is what makes it interesting - learning why you all like or dislike something. Gloria - I'm so glad you commented. I completely believe that your home should work for you, and if what works for you is shelving, then I'm glad you've got it! Follow your own beat - it's YOUR home!
It seemed like everyone was overwhelming nay at first. I never thought shelving could be polarizing! Well, I guess you could call mine ledges, but I like em! Thanks for the feedback!
