color post: which pinks love grey

For so many years beige, or some form of warm neutral,
was the go-to backdrop for every space.

Now, with grey at the forefront of design,
many of us are trying to make the switch from warm neutrals to cool ones...

Concerned about creating a space that feels "cold",
my clients usually want to incorporate some colorful accents when using grey on the walls.

A question I am constantly asked is what colors work with grey.

If you read my post on clean color,
you'll know that almost any hue works with grey,
what's important is that it is a pure hue that has been mixed only with white, black, or grey.

but one of my favourite combinations is grey mixed up with pink and it's cohorts...

and when I saw this living room, I swooned, because the color mix is exactly right.

grey wall and sofa + with fresh garden hues - how about that lush emerald?

(and note how the pillow on the right, sconce art and side table
pick up the the warm tones found in the wood floor and allow for a harmonious mix.)

Black adds glam to the combo,
and although I may have chosen a slightly cooler tone for the walls,
those chairs are showstoppers, aren't they?

Turquoise plays well with fuchsia against a serene dove grey backdrop,
because they are equal in saturation.

Just as the palest of pinks pairs perfectly with the palest of greys to create this tranquil space.

The pink is fairly dominant in these living/dining rooms at first glance,
but it's actually only the sofa and flowers that are pink.

So much impact from one piece of furniture!

Look how differently the paint and sofa color appear in the different photos.
This is why you should never choose a paint color based solely on a photo!!!
(hmm... I smell a future post :)

and some pretty bits of high contrast...
so want that painting, top left.

What do you think?
Would you ever use this combination?

Since they are so popular right now,
I think I'll do a few posts exploring grey based color schemes...

any particular one you'd like to see explored next?

Anne-Marie,
Your images are wonderful examples of mixing grey and pink to create a warm color scheme. I have a serious passion for pink, so this is my kind of post! What truly surprised and intrigued me was the first image, and the combination of the medium, sultry grey, with pink and emerald green. What a stunning combination!
Thanks for stopping by, and for your lovely comment!

I love so many of these rooms; I'd live in that bath tub :)

My preference is for the bold contrast.

I'd love to see a post on grey and green if you could?

great examples of grey and pink. I love it - I would have loved to order our new sofa in a lovely pink shade but my guy couldn't be convinced. Oh well, I'll just have to sneak in some pink somewhere else ; )

Love that basket and headboard in your last collage on left.
I used Benjamin Moore Thunder in most of my new house and we are loving the clean bright feel.
We are thinking of making my daughter's room (Behr Be Mine Pink) a little more grown up and she's really into purple.
I'm thinking of combining the deeper grey of BM Thunderstorm with a headboard wall of BM darkest grape. She has a white iron bed and this bright IKEA bedding in a different pattern with a bit more of the purple. Her curtains are white with pink polka dots.

I've ALWAYS hated pink ( blame it on my tomboyish upbringing) but lately I can't get enough of it. I'm loving the coral-ish pink and grey right now.

Wonderful inspiration (as always!)

I LOVE the colours in the first living room! Beautiful!
My daughter 9 has just chosen pale grey for her bedroom wall and has it with pinks, red and orange.
We have painted our bedroom wall Charcoal and have timber floors and grey linen curtains. I'm keen to add some green somewhere. Would love your feedback :)

Gorgeous post! My room is going white/grey/neutral, and I've been thinking of adding in a few small pink details :)

I'd love to see what colours you would put together to give the gary/pink combo a more masculine twist. While I adore pink/gray, I do earn to add to it another colour (besides black) for depth.

I like the image with emerald green pillow :) it gives the gray/pink a very sophisticated twist.

I love the idea of paring gray with purple or lilac. But, again, this is only 2 colours, so maybe a post on gray + pink + (___)= sophistication/character??

Always enjoy reading your blog, Anne-Marie, and your topic today is sooo timely!

Any chance you could do a post on grey and brown? I'm struggling with wanting to switch my walls to grey in an open-plan house with lots of cream, brown, black and rust furnishings on medium oak flooring. (I'm sooooo sick of all this brown!) I think I've found a grey that *might* work.....BM CC-490 (Stone Hearth), but I'm struggling with "my instincts" vs. sound colour theory. Would appreciate your take on grey and brown.

By the way, I never thought of using a dark grey in a nursery, but love the one you included in today's post!

Cheers, Michelle

Love grey with pink! I wish I could have more pink in my home, but it gets veto-ed very quickly by the boys. Beautiful images! Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I'm doing warm grey right now (brown-based, not blue-based grey) in a room with coral walls and lavendar/plum accents.

LOVE all your color posts. You should write a book.
